What is Concrete Road Curb

Concrete road curb is the road edging where a flat pavement or path meets an unflat street or walkway, the level of both roads is different and the water will flow to the lower level portion.

It’s one type of concrete curb called combined curb and gutters. It’s commonly used to overcome the flooding problems.

Normally road curb is made from concrete, stones, alphalt and etc, but concrete and alphalt are commonly used for road curb in construction industries. Wherever you go on the road, you can see the concrete road curb besides the walkway.

Function Of Concrete Road Curb

There is a few of function and usage for the concrete curb at the roadside. There will be a few purposes of installing concrete curb :

i) Avoid Flood
It’s works as a gutter that allows the water flow in by lower road level and flow into the drainage.

ii) Safety To Driver And Motorcyclist
If there is no concrete curb there, driver might drives onto the walkway and people on the walkway might get hurt. Other than this, if there is no concrete curb as a drainage system, there must be flood when raining, the water might stopped at the roadside without flow into the drainage in proper way. It’s very slip, when motocyle or car pass by, the tires can be slip and cause them to lose visibility and ability to brake and stop down, it may causes an accident.

Type Of Concrete Road Curb

i) Basic Curb

That’s very easy to construct basic concrete curb because you don’t have to joint it with gutter, it’s a straight concrete curb. But it’s rarely used it can’t helps to overcome the flood problems, it’s only used in minimal location.

ii) Combined Curb and Gutter

This type of concrete curb is a combination of curb and gutter, the photo above shows that the gutter is used for the water flowing into the drainage system. This is commonly used in driveways everywhere.

iii) Integral Curb

This type of concrete curb are constructed as a part of sidewalk too. As you see in the photo above, the concrete curb is joining concrete sidewalk. Normally it’s cast-in-situ, which mean the concrete curb is constructed on the spot at the site.

iv) Kassel Curb

Kassel curb is purposely constructed for the buses especially in bus stops. Normally the basic concrete curb has a lower level and it’s difficult to passenger to enter the bus which has higher steps. Kassel curb has been raised up to improve accessibility for mobility-impaired passenger.

v) Precast Curb

Of course, there are some precast concrete curb too which is produced in the factory and bring to site whenever there is an usage of relevant concrete curb. Precast concrete curb will be used if the client need a faster completion of work, of course the prices for those precast concrete curb will be slightly higher than cast-in-site curb.

Pattern Of Concrete Road Curb

There is many patterns for concrete curb, as you see in the photo above, there are angle, round, mower, multi lighted, angle lighted, walkway, parking, square, wheel block and etc. Rounded concrete curbs are most commanly used for driveways that the sidewalk has grassy setback from the street.

The photo named “Straight Concrete Road Curb” above is using a wheel block concrete curb, while this pattern are commonly used for the sidewalk that lay with premix.

Concrete curb machine is used to construct the concrete curb, concrete curb for parking lot, concrete curb for roadside, walkway, garden, golf courses, recreation area and etc. There are several types of concrete curb machine, every curb machine has their own advantages and disadvantages.

As I mentioned in my previous article, precast concrete road curb is one type of concrete road curb that manufacturer produces it in various shapes. The precast concrete road curb will be sent to the construction site when there is an usage of precast road curb.

It doesn’t like concrete landscape curb which constructed on the spot at the construction site or we called it “cast-in-site”. Of course, not only concrete landscape curb do have cast-in-situ while normal concrete road curb does have cast-in-situ by using various type of concrete curbing machine.

Why Most Of The Contractors Like To Use Precast Concrete Road Curb?

1) Time Saving
Most of the contractors like to use precast concrete road curb instead of using cast-in-situ method, one of the reasons is time saving. By using precast concrete road curb, it saves a lot of time instead of preparing all the machines, materials and workmanship to construct it on the spot at the site.

Time is everything in construction, contractor is given a time frame to complete the project. With that said, using precast concrete product saves a lot of time. In case contractor not able to complete the task within the time frame, most probably the contractor will be charged a cost by the client, in other word we called it “Liquidated Ascertained Damages” (LAD). To avoid these happen, I would say precast concrete product is one of the suitable and awesome product for concrete contractors.

2) Save Cost
Other than time saving, contractors might be able to save cost as well. In point #1, time is everything in construction, cost can be saved from workmanship. Why cost can be saved from workmanship since the manufacturer has already added this into their prices?

I make an example, let’s say contractor constructs the concrete road curb with cast-in-situ method, for a small tasks, most of the contractor might pay their workers in Day-Work method which mean contractor will pay their worker in day by day basis. In this situation, on one of the working day, that’s a raining day and workers not able to continue their works (Concrete works are not recommended to do on rainy day because the concrete takes time to become strong and stable, the quality of the concrete will be gone). With that said, contractor will be charged for 1 more working day to pay their workers. By using precast concrete road curb, the quality of the concrete can be maintained and workers able to complete the tasks in just a few hours time.

By completing the tasks within the time frame given by client, contractor will be saved and not being charged LAD by client as I mentioned in point #1.

Precast Concrete Road Curb – Concrete Road Curb is not only used for landscape purpose, but it used to protect the traffic lights and signboards as well. It’s commonly used in many foreign countries too.

Precast Concrete Intermediate Curb – It’s the same type of precast concrete road curb but it’s used in the intermediate of the 2-way carriageways. It’s used to distance the both roadway to avoid accident.

Concrete Grade

Normally the concrete grade used for precast concrete road curb is 20N/mm2. It’s more than enough to maintain it’s strength. The precast concrete road curb is already produce in various shape, you can simply get the information and precast concrete specifications from your local precast concrete product manufacturer.

Concrete landscape curb can be either precast or cast-in-situ. As what I mentioned in my previous article, cast-in-situ is those concrete that constructed on the spot on the site by labour. Probably concrete landscape curb is used to decorate our yard and make our yard to be different with your neighbours. Other than this, we call it as landscape edging as well. By using landscape edging for your yard, it makes your garden looks neat and clean as well.

Concrete landscape curb can be done by simple landscape curbing machine as what I show in “Concrete Curbing Machine List“. It don’t cost you a lot and it simple and fast to settle the job. It doesn’t like what I wrote for concrete road curb which curved combined concrete road curb and gutter takes you about few days to finish it.

Step By Step : How To Build Concrete Landscape Curb

I found a video from Youtube that we can learn how to build the concrete landscape curb for our yard, it’s a very simple video and it takes your 2 minutes to learn how to construct concrete landscape curb in short time.

1) Ground preparation
Ground preparation is meaning that we have to excavate a shallow with a hoe. After that, we have to make it flat and neat so that the landscape curbing machine can be move smoothly and done in short time.

2) Mixing concrete
After ground preparation, we may have to start mixing the concrete with a concrete mixer and bring it to the construction location.

3) Laying concrete
So we can now start laying concrete on the location that we want to construct landscape curbing. We will fix the landscape concrete curbing machine on the edging 1st, we need 2 persons to work on it if not the progress might be very slow. 1 person control the curbing machine and 1 person put the concrete into the machine. After put the concrete into the machine, another person will be pulling the curbing machine and the curb shape will be follow by the machine as what we saw in the video.

4) Finishing
The concrete edging is not as smooth as what we want, so we have to make it smooth with a tool. After that, we have to cut it into pieces.

5) Exposing Aggregate
In this stage, we have to expose the aggregate on the surface of curbing edging and make it stabilize and stand for longer without cracking.

6) Stamping
After that, we have to do stamping on the surface of the landscape curbing. The landscape curbing is now looks like built with small pieces of brick. The purpose of this is to make it unique and decorative. We have to do it unique because the main purpose of doing landscape curb is to make the place looks unique and decorative.

7) Spraying
Last, spray again with the aggregate and make it stable again. Done!

Conclusion

By building the concrete landscape curb, it only takes you a very short period to complete it. What you get is a very nice and unique garden, it totally looks different with your neighbours. The work is done in few hours time, it doesn’t make your place dirty and messy. It’s the easiest and simplest way to build the concrete landscape curb for your garden and yard.

Concrete Curb can be done by using precast method, but sometimes contractors might choose to use cast-in-situ method too which is casting the concrete curb at construction site. By using cast-in-situ method, it doesn’t require any concrete curbing machine. With that said, the cost can be save from here without using any machinery.

In constructing a longer straight concrete curb at the construction site, it might requires more workers to complete the job on time. With that said, the cost will be increasing on this part. Other than this, contractor must ensures that the workers can complete the casting and make it in shape because the concrete will be fixed in certain period.

How To Build Concrete Curb By Hand

1) Build up the mold or formwork which is in concrete curb shape.

2) Mixing the concrete in correct mixture.

3) Pouring the concrete into the mold or formwork just now.

4) A few of workers are starting to smoothen the concrete curb with a timber plank. Workers must compact the concrete curb so that it won’t be collapsed or cracked easily. Workers must complete this task as soon as possible before the concrete fixed in shape.

5) After the workers have done the concrete works, they might need to take off the formwork or mold after the concrete is fixed in shape. Job is completed and workers have to continue other works like drainage system.

Shower curb is a type of concrete curb, but it’s constructed in different location and situation. Shower curb is using the similar materials with normal concrete curb which is concrete or cement mortar, but it’s different in term of the purposes of building shower curb. Usually concrete curb is built in the roadside, yard, and etc, while shower curb is built into the rest room.

The purpose of building shower curb in the rest room or wash room is to prevent the water flow out to the external floor. It’s act as a shower drain as well, it directs the water to the drain instead of flowing out to the external floor. In this situation, it’s meaning that the shower curb will be contacted with the water, shower curb is built by concrete too, which means in order to prevent the water contacts the concrete shower curb and affect the durability of shower curb, shower curb needed to be protected by some kind of water proofing system.

How To Build Shower Curb

There are several ways and methods to build shower curb, one of the way is using plaster board. The plaster board acts as a wall to prevent the water soaks into the shower curb. It’s kinda simple to build the shower curb with the method of using plaster board. Procedures as below :

1) Assuming that the concrete curb has been done.

2) You have to install the plaster board that has been bought from the supplier.

3) Jointing the plaster board with screws that can be joining with the shower curb.

4) Cutting the extra portion of the plaster board.

5) For the curving shower curb, the plaster board need to be cut in 45 degree that can be joining with the following shower curb.

6) After shower curb has been cut, join them in a suitable length.

7) After the shape has been set, install the plastic board on the shower curb.

8 ) After placing them nicely, secure the plastic board outside the wall of the shower curb by using the galvanized roofing nails.

9) Shower curb with plastic board has done!

There are couples of design of concrete drain in construction, such as berm drain, toe drain, embankment shoulder drain, cascaded drain and etc. All of them are made from concrete, the mixture of the concrete is depending on what drain to be constructed. Concrete drain can be constructed by hand, without any machine, concrete can be mixed by hand as well if the quantity used is less. Sometimes concrete drain can be spoiled or failure, concrete drain such as cascaded drain is connecting with the concrete curb, if the concrete curb doesn’t function well to control velocity of the water flow, the high speed of water flow might destroy the concrete cascaded drain, so rectification work for concrete drain has to be carried on.

How To Rectify Eroded Concrete Drain

1) The eroded concrete drain shall be excavated and form benching with a case backhoe.

2) Suitable earth shall be filled in layer and compact with a plate compactor.

How To Build Concrete Drain

1) After completion of reinstatement of the eroded concrete drain to the profile, excavation of the concrete cascading drain shall be carry out by case backhoe.

2) The bottom trench earth shall be levelled and trimmed manually by general workers for laying for 50mm thick lean concrete.

3) After the lean concrete had set, erection of formwork shall be carried out.

4) BRC reinforcement of the correct dimensions shall be installed.

5) Grade 20 concrete shall be laid and compact with poker vibrator up the drain bottom slab.

6) After the base concrete had set, concrete drain side wall reinforcement and formwork shall be installed.

7) Grade 20 concrete shall be delivered, laid and compact to specification.

8 ) Prior to all concreting works, formwork and reinforcement shall be inspected by the Engineer or his representative to ensure that the formwork and reinforcement are properly aligned and secured in place.

There are several concrete curb equipment need to be used to build the concrete curbing, such as trowel, undercarriages, plungers, slurry tray, molds and etc. Besides these, there are several type of molds in the market too, such as concrete molds, steel molds, fiberglass molds, plastic molds, rubber mold, silicone molds and etc. While steel mold is usually been used to build concrete curb. Molds are used to support the wide array of curb styles, it can be installed and used easily.

Curb and gutter form is common concrete curb which is constructed in combination of concrete curb and a concrete gutter, the function of curb and gutter forms is the same as common concrete curb, to direct the water to the nearest drainage system. There are 2 types of curb and gutter forms which is Straight Curb & Gutter and Radius Curb & Gutter, obviously from the names for both curb and gutter form and we could know they have different shape and components to be used. Usually curb and gutter forms are used to form a concrete curbing as traffic barriers on the sides of streets, parking lots, driveways, and roads to direct the rainwater to the nearest drainage system.

This type of concrete curb doesn’t require concrete curbing machine to construct, this type of concrete curb might need to be constructed by hand. Several concrete curb workers might need to be hired and concrete mixer need to be used too. The materials that will be used to construct the curb and gutter forms are concrete, expansion joint filler, curing compound and steel reinforcement bar. The concrete curb and gutter forms will be measured in meter according to Standard of Method of Measurement.

Components of Curb Gutter Forms

The components that used to construct the curb and gutter forms system are slightly different between both types of curb and gutter forms system. The components that will be used for Straight Curb and Gutter setup are front form, nail stake, curb face form, division plate, back form and top spreader. While the components that will be used for Radius Curb and Gutter setup are radius back form, curbface form, full division plate, radius front form, skeleton division plates and form pins.

Types of Curbs for Straight Curb and Gutter Forms

There are 5 basic types of curbs that are used to construct straight curb and gutter forms, types of concrete curb to be used is depending on the situation and location of the curbs to be built.

1) Vertical face – A setup with the front and the back must be in 90 degree angle.

2) Battered face – A curbface with the front and the back must be in somewhere around 90 degree angle.

3) Bottom radius – A battered curbface with a single radius formed into the bottom of the curb.

4) Top and bottom radius – A battered curbface with a radius formed into the top and bottom of the curb.

5) Drive over – A curbface with a slow, gradual batter allowing traffic to pass over.
