Precast Concrete Road Curb

Precast Concrete Road Curb

As I mentioned in my previous article, precast concrete road curb is one type of concrete road curb that manufacturer produces it in various shapes. The precast concrete road curb will be sent to the construction site when there is an usage of precast road curb.

It doesn’t like concrete landscape curb which constructed on the spot at the construction site or we called it “cast-in-site”. Of course, not only concrete landscape curb do have cast-in-situ while normal concrete road curb does have cast-in-situ by using various type of concrete curbing machine.

Why Most Of The Contractors Like To Use Precast Concrete Road Curb?

1) Time Saving
Most of the contractors like to use precast concrete road curb instead of using cast-in-situ method, one of the reasons is time saving. By using precast concrete road curb, it saves a lot of time instead of preparing all the machines, materials and workmanship to construct it on the spot at the site.

Time is everything in construction, contractor is given a time frame to complete the project. With that said, using precast concrete product saves a lot of time. In case contractor not able to complete the task within the time frame, most probably the contractor will be charged a cost by the client, in other word we called it “Liquidated Ascertained Damages” (LAD). To avoid these happen, I would say precast concrete product is one of the suitable and awesome product for concrete contractors.

2) Save Cost
Other than time saving, contractors might be able to save cost as well. In point #1, time is everything in construction, cost can be saved from workmanship. Why cost can be saved from workmanship since the manufacturer has already added this into their prices?

I make an example, let’s say contractor constructs the concrete road curb with cast-in-situ method, for a small tasks, most of the contractor might pay their workers in Day-Work method which mean contractor will pay their worker in day by day basis. In this situation, on one of the working day, that’s a raining day and workers not able to continue their works (Concrete works are not recommended to do on rainy day because the concrete takes time to become strong and stable, the quality of the concrete will be gone). With that said, contractor will be charged for 1 more working day to pay their workers. By using precast concrete road curb, the quality of the concrete can be maintained and workers able to complete the tasks in just a few hours time.

By completing the tasks within the time frame given by client, contractor will be saved and not being charged LAD by client as I mentioned in point #1.

Hi there! At last, someone who writes about something that has been gnawing at my heart.

Concrete curbs or rather the lack of quality curbs put up by most of our Malaysian roadworks ‘con’tractors!

I say ‘con’ because most of the buggers who are given contracts to build or install concrete curbs usually short change the local governments by using less quality cement and more sand in their premix.

They usually have these nice looking finish consisting of a thin layer of fine cement on top but after a few weeks or a month or so, the entire concrete curb just breaks away piece by piece and soon, voila! Another tender comes up to repair or remove and ‘build’ all over again!

I have photos of such shortchanges.

I am really pissed off to see our contractors do such a lowdown ‘con’ job!

The British Colonials built so many buildings and laid infrastructures that withstood the test of time and we owe them so much.

Our ‘con’tractors deserve to be steamrolled into oblivion!

    What’s your take on this?

MAHAGURU58 : First of all, I would like to say hi and welcome to concrete curb dot com. I do really appreciate and agree on what you said about “con”tractors. Yes, in current construction area, there is so many “con”tractors are trying to “save cost” and reduce the quality of their product. I’d faced of this problem in the past few months.

In a project, I did assign a Sub-Contractor to repair the certain concrete works such as manhole, cascaded drain and etc. The contractor used lot of sand instead of cement in the mix, and trying to construct all the concrete works. After a few days, the concrete works were starting to become worst. But I’d mentioned in the contract among us, “Contractors have to ensure the works to be in good condition for 3 months or maintain the Works until the receiving of Certificate of Making Good Defect from the Client”. With that said, the contractor was required to repair the works again.

I hate those “con”tractors because they waste our times and cost and end up we get the low quality products!

Is MAHAGURU58 involved in Construction area before?

    Nice to meet you!

    Regards,
    Ray

No Ray. I am just a concerned citizen who cringes with disgust everytime I come across a disintegrating curb or roadwork!

I know that times are hard and ‘con’tractors think that they can get away with such cheapskate work but do they not have a sense of pride or accountability when they complete their jobs?

I mean if I were a contractor, I’d make absolutely sure that my work is tip top and above the usual standards.

If I deliver substandard work, wouldn’t my reputation suffer and I lose out on future jobs?

So, whomsoever is doing all these bullshit jobs should be stripped of their license and be barred from any future opportunities or considerations for any public or private projects.

I hope that you will do a better job than those ‘con’tractors.

Deliver the best and you will always be preferred over the rest!
